If you are considering going to France for a holiday, you may well be thinking of Southern France as your potential destination. The South of France has a lot to offer and if the weather is good to you there are any number of places you can go and things you can do. From coastal areas to Roman ruins, there is no telling where you might end up.

One destination in particular has lots to offer. One of five main things you can do there is to visit the Palais des Papes. There was a time when the Pope did not reside in Rome, and during that time he resided here instead. You can see some of the main attractions in the residence as it was many years ago.

If you haven’t figured out the destination yet, here is another clue. The Notre-Dame des Doms is well worth a look, situated in the city and dating back to the 12th century. In fact wherever you look in this location you will find countless signs of times gone by.

Moving on to something a little more artistic now, there is also the Calvet Museum to consider. This is no ordinary museum – it does not reside in a modern building but in a mansion, which itself is well worth a closer look. The collection of artwork within was brought together by Esprit Calvet, who donated all the artwork he owned to the city that the museum can be found in. Whatever opinions you hold of art in general, you are sure to find something here you like.

Our fourth destination in this city is the Saint-Bénezet Bridge. Many cities have a bridge that they are well known for, and it becomes something of an emblem for the city as well. This particular bridge was originally around nine hundred metres in length when it was finished in 1185. Needless to say the basic design suffered badly in those times and it needed repairs during times when parts of it fell to bits. The bridge had twenty two arches originally, and you can see just four of them today. It does not even span the width of the river it was originally built to cross.

If you need one final clue as to which city you are in – and which one you will want to visit – here it is. This city is filled with squares and markets, and it is well worth exploring them to see what you can find. This is one of the trademarks of Avignon, the city where all of these treasures and more can be found. If you thought you knew the South of France, think again. This city is a bridge between the past and the present that begs to be crossed.
