The traditional British seaside holiday is still well and truly in existence. Although you may not be guaranteed the intense heat that other European summer holiday destinations enjoy, a break along the coastline of the British Isles makes up for it in the vast choice of places to go, all packed with their own natural beauty and charm.
The English south coast is probably top of the list in popularity for a classic British summer holiday. Dotted with pretty coastal towns and beautiful beaches, it enjoys the best of the British summer weather, making it a favourite choice for sun seekers.
The south coast boasts the ever-popular sunny coastline of Cornwall, where you will find Newquay, a British holiday jewel. Home to golden sandy beaches and spectacular countryside, topped off with a great variety of sports and leisure activities, it’s no wonder this is a seaside favourite. Other gems along the Cornish coast include the suntrap of Penzance, on the far western stretch, and Weymouth with a picturesque harbour and a thriving but quaint town centre.
The Isle of Wight, off the south coast, is a paradise for those wanting to pack their holiday with sports activities such as golf, fishing, sailing and windsurfing. Although, if that all sounds a bit too energetic, you can simply make the most of the long summer days and discover hidden coves and bays along the 60 miles of beautiful coastline the island offers. Nearby Hayling Island, a small and sheltered isle is also another favourite holiday destination.
It’s not just the south coast that has something to deliver the sun and sand seekers. Avoid the crowds and enjoy your
summer holidays on the east coast and discover Aldeburgh, a charming fishing village, unspoilt by tourism and perfect for a restful family break, or Cromer, another town famous for it’s nautical history, where you can enjoy stunning sunsets from the town’s famous lighthouse. Whitby, another east coast prize and home to Captain James Cook, will transport you back in time with its charming cobblestone streets and enduring traditions.
If you are after something a little livelier than what these picturesque coastal villages might offer, head to Blackpool, on the north-west coast, or Brighton, a 50 minutes drive south of London. You can enjoy the bright modern luxuries of a city, as well as smell the sea breeze and experience sand between your toes at the cities beaches.
Lively Southport, on the west coast, is another popular UK summer destination. While it may not be a city, it still boasts a great dining scene, excellent shopping and being ‘England’s Golfing Capital, is a great stop for golf enthusiasts.
Whether it’s an all in family holiday, a peaceful getaway with just the two of you or a break all for yourself, the coastline on the British Isles has a patch of paradise to suit.
