If there's ever a time for wrapping yourself up in some hardy denim, it's the autumn and winter months. A good pair of thick jeans will see you through the coldest months in style, but make sure you choose the right style for the weather to make the most out of your winter wardrobe.

One of the best things about jeans is how flexible an item of clothing they are. While they were originally designed to be a hard-wearing solution for working men, jeans are now welcome everywhere from the office to a trendy nightclub. However, the suitability of your jeans for any given situation can depend greatly on the cut and style. For example, a pair of super skinny jeans could be a little too risqué for a board meeting while a pair of classic cut jeans may not have the pulling power you're hoping for on a night out.

Choosing the right pair of jeans can become more difficult in the autumn and winter months too, as you not only need to work out which style looks bets, but also which will best cope with adverse weather conditions. Rain and snow in particular can play havoc with your jeans, but you can choose particular styles that will minimise the chances of you getting soaked to the skin.

To avoid getting waterlogged, it's a good idea to choose closer fitting styles, such as skinny, slim of straight cuts. Flares are particularly bad for dragging in puddles and soaking you, so save these ones for the summer months.

On the other hand, if it's snowing outside, you're likely to want to be wearing a warm pair of boots, so you're best off looking for bootcut style jeans. These are designed with a little extra space at the ankle to accommodate your winter boots so they won't ride up or bunch at your knees, however, make sure they are exactly the right length if you want to avoid the same problem with puddles you can get with flares.

Skinny jeans are a good choice for the colder months as they can help balance out your look when your top half is wrapped up in a bulky jacket. But if the temperatures drop really low, you might be best choosing mens jeans with a relaxed fit - that way you can slip on a pair of thermals underneath and no one will be any the wiser!
