In early 2011, Colin Firth became one of the latest actors to get his name set in stone – he received an honour that many celebrities crave: a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. For many Firth fans, this addition may seem long overdue, but it’s Firth’s most recent performances that have sealed the accolade for him. Firth gave a stunning show in 2010 masterpiece The King’s Speech, where he played King George VI, who attempts to overcome his speech impediment in order to denounce the Nazis at a crucial point in European history. Firth’s international acclaim was fully sealed and the appropriate prizes awarded including a Bafta for Leading Actor for The King’s Speech.
Firth was born in Hampshire, England, in 1960 to university lecturer parents’, he moved to London after secondary education in order to begin acting training and be surrounded by more acting opportunities and roles. He appeared in stage performances and screen adaptations of plays during his early 20s and soon rose to fame among a troupe of rising British actors who became known as the ‘Brit Pack’. This group contained other performers including Gary Oldman, Tim Roth, Bruce Payne and Paul McGann.
It wasn’t until Firth took the part of Mr Darcy in the BBC’s television adaptation of Pride and Prejudice during the mid-nineties that he became a household name though, and alongside the series’ international fame he also gained a reputation as a bit of a heartthrob thanks to his role as the romantic lead. He then went on to play a romantic interest for Bridget Jones in the film adaptation of Bridget Jones’ Diary, playing Mark Darcy as something of an in-joke, particularly as the books describe Colin Firth as one of Bridget’s objects of affection.
After this, Firth went on to star in films in earnest. Through the following decade, Firth appeared in film after film and further sealed his household status on an international scale. His most recent film, The King’s Speech, scored him an Oscar, Golden Globe and a BAFTA on top of his Hollywood Walk of Fame star, and The Kings Speech is coming to DVD soon so people can see Firth in action at home.
What the future holds for Colin Firth is unknown but it’s sure to be filled with further successes and many more great parts. During his diverse acting career, Firth has shown his clear natural ability to act and we can only expect to continue seeing him on the big and small screen as his career and repertoire grows.
