Being a parent is one of the single most important things you'll do in your lifetime, so it's little surprise it can be a scary prospect for many people. However, for a number of people it's not parenthood itself that proves a problem in the long run, but the pressure to be a perfect parent. In fact, the expectation that parents should be able to achieve the super-human in terms of looking after their children, holding down important jobs and keeping their homes immaculate is a major problem for a number of individuals.



The pressure to be the perfect parent can have the exact opposite effect, with many stressed and tired parents finding themselves suffering from depression or anxiety related illnesses. This problem is exacerbated by many of the demands of modern living and a number of perhaps unrealistic expectations when it comes to parenting. Some parents become very unhappy when they believe they are not living up to these expectations, and feelings of failure as a parent can sometimes lead to serious feelings of depression or anxiety.





If you're suffering from depression as a result, then it's crucial that you do not suffer alone. While it may be difficult to admit to your feelings, you will not be helping yourself or your family by trying to ignore them. Depression as a parent can have a ripple effect throughout the whole family, and even if you try and hide it or choose not to tell your children what is going on, there's a high likelihood they will be aware of the problem to some extent anyway - even if it's on a subconscious level.



It can be very difficult to explain the situation to young children, but it has been found to be an important step to take. If you leave your children in the dark to dream up their own reasons for your behaviour, you can leave them feeling insecure, confused and unsure of your feelings towards them.



By seeking treatment and help, you are more likely to be able to look after your children well as you're likely to have more energy and a better ability to be reactive to your child's needs. Stress can manifest itself in children in a number of different ways, from bad behaviour to the kind of skin conditions that necessitate trips to a children's hospital. Making sure you spend plenty of time reassuring your children that they are not the reason that you are suffering difficulties and making them feel secure is essential.
