Dubai has grown a strong reputation as one of the liveliest destinations in the Middle East, thanks to its number of excellent nightclubs, bars and restaurants allowing visitors to enjoy their holidays around the clock. You'll find some of the world's most cosmopolitan and welcoming nightspots in Dubai, whether you're looking for somewhere to dance the night away or to enjoy a peaceful drink with friends old and new.

Like any major international city, Dubai attracts its fair share of big-name DJs as well as revellers, and its clubs are havens for lovers of all types of music. With this greater popularity comes ever more stringent rules, however, and just like anywhere else you should make sure you look and act the part if you expect to be let into the city's trendiest establishments. Some may even require you to book in advance, especially during peak tourism seasons, or to book a bottle of wine to secure admission for your group.

That's not to say nights out in Dubai have to be expensive though, and you can find many places to unwind at an affordable price to help you relax after a long day's sightseeing. Some of Dubai's bars and cafes serve food comparable to the best restaurants, and with innovative and quirky décor in many establishments - such as the World War II memorabilia of English pub Biggles - the entertainment doesn't stop in Dubai as soon as the sun goes down.

Many Dubai bars are perfect places to hang out and enjoy animated conversations over a few drinks, such as Buddha Bar, while those with a taste for live music could enjoy performances from local talent at venues such as Rock Bottom Cafe. Some of Dubai's bars also attract international travellers due to their license to sell alcohol - a rarity in the United Arab Emirates outside of hotels - making locations such as the Irish Village pub big hits with tourists.

Even with such a wealth of options available, you should be sure to do your research before travelling to Dubai for its nightlife, to avoid potential disappointment. Many of Dubai's nightclubs and bars are required to close by 3am, with heavy fines for operators who exceed this limit, and you should also be wary about visiting during religious festivals and holidays. Ramadan is the principal one of these, occurring from September to October, when clubs may be closed altogether.
