Many an hour has been whiled away, spent contemplating the ins and outs of the perfect holiday. Indeed, there's so much to consider. For instance, where would you go? Would you stay in a beach resort or self-catering accommodation? Do you want to trek to Tibet or canoe down the Grand Canyon? Or maybe a relaxing spa is more your cup of tea.

With so many options available today, it can be harder than you first imagine to define your dream holiday. And, with everything from cruises and city breaks to camping or safari, it is possible to go anywhere and do anything (obviously within reason!).

For many, action and adventure holidays are a great way to take a break from the reality of the daily grind, with the lure of the undiscovered raising a primal instinct in those keen to explore uncharted territory. However, with so many globetrotters compared to 30 years ago, it can be tough finding places that haven't been taken over by tourists.

So, where can you find a place that offers a truly unique experience, rich in diversity and culture? Oh, and somewhere that won't break the bank?

Spend enough time researching and you are sure to unearth a few, relatively untouched havens. Take Gambia as a prime example. One of Africa's smallest country's - 4,000 square miles - it can be described as a true African oasis, filled with endless, often deserted beaches, local villages and plenty of bush to forage through!

The capital, Banjul, is perfect for uncovering the country's many traditions, with its main market providing a great focal point. It is also here that you can learn about the distinctive batik art and local tie-dye crafts.

The River Gambia is an ideal location for releasing your inner explorer. At 1,130 km long, it offers the visitor an unparalleled opportunity to go river cruising, whilst you soak up the stunning natural scenery and wildlife that can be found. And, with over 500 species of birds to look out for alone, as well as numerous monkeys, you will be kept extremely busy.

It is also worth taking some time to go around the country. There are many local villages, where the traditional way of life is still very much in evidence. Not only that, but it's also possible to pick up a camel, watch a little African wrestling, fish for barracuda and take a jeep safari along the way, all whilst indulging in some truly original cuisine.

After all the excursions, it might be advisable taking some time out prior to heading home. Therefore, kicking back on one of Gambia's many sun-drenched beaches, or wandering around the beautiful Botanical Gardens is a great idea to restore tranquillity before you hit work again.

And, due to its close proximity to Europe, it is possible to find a range of holidays in Gambia that won't blow the budget. So, what are you waiting for? Get your travellers shoes on and start exploring today!
