With the May Day Bank Holiday fast approaching, many people are starting to think about how to spend the national holiday - especially as planning ahead could help you save money and avoid the disappointment of finding out places are fully booked.

Whether you prefer a quiet day at home with the family or a memorable day out to de-stress from the daily grind, bank holidays offer a wealth of opportunities - especially as the long weekend means you can spend several days enjoying the activities of your choice without having to worry about getting home and ready for work too soon.

Taking days out is a popular choice for couples, families and single travellers too, and with short flight times putting many destinations at your fingertips, you could even enjoy a half-week holiday if you set off early. Not that you have to travel far to enjoy a great day out, of course, with many excellent opportunities for fun-filled days out right here in the UK.

If you have children, a visit to a theme park, national park or anything to do with animals is usually a sure-fire hit, and with the weather improving as summer approaches you stand a good chance of avoiding the rain. If you're feeling sociable, you should find out what your friends, colleagues or other family members are up to on the bank holiday as well, as you could find that your plans go together quite nicely.

You might understandably not want to rush about and take long journeys on your precious day off though, and for that reason the bank holiday can also be the ideal time to put your feet up, catch up on your favourite TV shows or do some reading. You should also take the opportunity to treat yourself and make the day even more special, such as using those spa day vouchers or beauty gift vouchers you've been saving for a special occasion.

On the other hand, if sitting around doesn't suit your personality and you prefer to be on the go, you could take advantage of the extra day at home to carry out some long-overdue DIY tasks or sort out your taxes and other responsibilities. That way, you can enjoy greater freedom in the weeks leading up to the bank holiday too, knowing that you've put a day aside to make sure it's all taken care of.
