We all look forward to our annual holidays for weeks and even months before they actually arrive. Once we’re on the plane and headed towards our destination we’ve got the camera out to ensure we’re ready to take the first photos of this year’s trip. Do we have enough memory cards? We do. Do we have batteries to last us for the duration? We certainly do. So we’re ready to launch ourselves into a week or a fortnight of snapping away at our new surroundings.
With the advent of the digital camera it has become easier than ever to take literally hundreds of photos during a two week break. So when we get home we’ve got the task of uploading them all onto our computer so we can sort through them. We can delete any that aren’t good enough and save the rest onto our hard drive or perhaps onto some discs or a USB stick as well.
Most of us have probably done just this on several occasions. It isn’t unusual to have thousands of photos all sitting on a hard drive where we can get easy access to them and print them out whenever we want to.
But supposing your computer failed and you lost your photos? Or what would happen if someone broke in and stole your laptop – together with all your prized and much loved holiday photos? We’d all like to think it wouldn’t happen to us, but the fact remains that it does happen to people on a daily basis. If you’ve got an old computer and it finally decides to give up the ghost, all your photos could be lost for ever.
Clearly there is a need to have additional security and start backing up online. After all, discs and portable hardware can be stolen just as your computer can. They can also get corrupted or damaged. Anyone could spill a drink on a flash drive and that would be your photos all gone.
But if you backed them up online you wouldn’t have this issue. Even if someone stole your computer you would know copies of all those precious holiday photos are safe and sound online. When you get a new computer – or even if you access your online account via another computer – they will still all be there ready for you to access or print out.
The main benefit for online backup is of course peace of mind. By subscribing to a
free online backup service you’ve got the knowledge that your most cherished snapshots will be safely copied in a secure data centre, and available via secured internet connection when you need them. So no matter what happens either now or in the future, you can be sure your pictures will be safe and free from harm.
