There are lots of things you need to think about and look for when it comes to getting a new job. Obviously you want a job that is more enjoyable than the one you have at the moment, otherwise there would be little point in moving. But what should you be looking for when you are searching for your next career move?
One of the main things to think about will of course be your salary or hourly rate. But this does not necessarily have to be significantly better than your old rate. If your new position comes with a number of good perks as well, you may find these outweigh the pros and cons of your old job.
For example let’s say your old job gave you four weeks holiday and an hourly rate of, say, £8. Your potential new position gives you six weeks holiday but the basic rate only goes up to £9. Obviously this is only a small pay increase, but at the same time you are getting a whole two weeks additional paid holiday every year. This would tempt many people into switching jobs.
Another perk might simply be the location of your new job. If you currently have a ninety minute trip to get to work and you find a job that pays slightly less but is situated just round the corner, it will definitely be worth taking. Not only will you save time every day, you will also save on travel costs. In fact it could turn out to be more cost effective even if you get a lower rate of pay in this instance.
It is also quite common for different perks to be available in different kinds of work. Not all perks are regular either; some may only pop up from time to time so be sure you make the most of them when they do appear. A good example may be a journalist who gets free access to lots of different events and get-togethers. In some cases they may also get the perk of being able to meet with famous people.
Of course this is an extreme situation. In many cases the perks are far more down to earth, but that doesn’t make them any less worthwhile.
A good example here would be health insurance. Many larger companies offer this kind of benefit to their workers. Another similar form of perk is
business dental insurance, which will cover your regular check ups and much more besides in many cases.
As you can see, a new job could mean a lot more than just a new salary or rate of pay. Always check to see what else you could be getting as well.
