Did you know that it costs your business a lot more to find new customers than it does to retain the ones you already have?

If you didn’t know this you should think about what it means for your business. Everyone wants to find new customers but if you focus on staying in touch with your existing ones you will very likely see a vast improvement in your sales. Since these people already know you and they have bought one or more products or services from you already, you will find it far easier to sell to them again. In addition they may well spend more with you in the future as well, instead of only putting in small orders.

There are lots of ways you can keep in touch with your customer base, but it is worth noting that you shouldn’t overdo it. For instance email is one of the cheapest and most effective methods to stay in touch, but if you were to send out an email newsletter every single day you wouldn’t be getting into your customer’s good books!

You need to be able to stand out from the crowd as well. Often many businesses will send email newsletters because they are a great way of reaching out to people and funnelling them through to your website. You can provide value, special offers and discounts and other ways to keep people shopping with you once they have bought from you on one occasion.

Staying in touch is also good for you in other ways. It means you can get to know your customers better. You can see what they buy, what their spending habits are and so on. This means you can offer them discounts on products you know they have an interest in. This alone can improve your sales and it makes you stand out as a company that identifies with and cares about its customers in various different ways. In today’s modern and challenging business world you can imagine how important this is to get right.

Another good way to keep the channels of communication open is to think about setting up several clear email addresses for different reasons. For example you can have an enquiries email address for all general enquiries, and another one for ordering. If your customers have different options to choose from it not only makes it easier for you to field the emails but they will find you more accessible as a company as well.

If you have business broadband you may find that you can set up several email addresses for your business free of charge anyway. But in any case this is a great way of making it easy for your customers to get in touch with you, whatever the reason for doing so may be.
