Thanks to the boom in social networking sites, people are now accustomed to chatting and socialising online, and the internet can be a great place to meet potential romantic partners too. When you sign up to a dating site, you can customise your profile to reveal as much or as little about yourself as you want other people to know - though you should carefully consider the information you're making public to people you don't really know.

Your personal security is of the utmost concern when using any dating site, which principally means avoiding disclosing details that could put you at risk - including your home address or telephone number. Learning how to withhold your number can be a useful skill if you don't wish people to have access to your contact details, and even your email address should be kept private unless you feel a certain level of trust.

You should never agree to meet someone at your own home if you haven't met them before, and even if you feel you know this person after reading their profile, chatting online or talking over the phone, they could be very different in person.

Instead, it's much safer to meet in a public place, where you won't have to worry about your personal safety and where you have an easy means of escape if you wish to end the date early. Whether you meet at a restaurant, cinema, theatre, art gallery or any other public venue is up to you and your shared interests. If you have your own car, driving there can also increase your safety, and avoid you being offered any unwanted rides home.

Before meeting your date, you should find out their name and inform someone you trust about where you're going, so they can come to your aid if you need them to. You may even wish to come up with a convincing line to use in the event that you wish to end the date early, rather than trusting it to improvisation on the big night itself.

There are different rules for dating safety depending on the person's age and situation. If you already have children from a previous relationship, it's usually not a good idea to bring your date home to meet the kids until you're sure that it's a serious relationship, as there could be psychological consequences to introducing different men to young children in particular.
