Winter is always a difficult time of year, and the winter of 2010 was particularly harsh, with temperatures dropping to new record lows. The snow caused havoc for drivers everywhere - there were delays on motorways with some motorists being held up until the early hours of the morning. The most common complaint from the public was the effort it took to get to work in the morning. Some were cut off from the surrounding villages/towns/cities completely and were unable to make it to work at all or pick up any groceries to live.

Those that take the blow hardest over the winter months are often van and truck drivers making various deliveries across the country. If you’re a van driver yourself, then it’s a good idea to check the condition of your vehicle now that winter is coming to a close.

It’s always a good idea to check the tyre pressure of your van. If you don’t have the tools to do this yourself, it may be best to ask a mechanic to do this for you. If you have built-in tyre pressure monitors then you shouldn’t have to worry about manually checking them as the monitor should tell you. However, if you do notice one or all your tyres slowly decreasing in pressure then it would be advised to do a manual check yourself or have one done by a mechanic.

Although it should be part of your monthly check of the vehicle anyway, check to see if you need an oil change. You should note each time you need an oil change to see how many times on average you need to change it per year.

Thanks to lots of snow and rain this winter, it is likely that your vehicle will have had problems starting. In most cases the battery and ignition will need to be looked at. The best way to combat any difficulties that may occur with the battery is to check it regularly and clean out any grime, mud, dirt or debris that may get stuck in it. It is important to do this as it can certainly affect your vehicles performance.

Make sure your brakes are working properly by checking all of the brake components as well. If you suspect anything could be wrong, it is highly recommended that you have them professionally checked and repaired.

If anything is wrong with your van, you can see if it is covered by your van insurance which would save you some money and help you to remain safe whilst driving.
