For a fascinating time to visit Manchester, there’s no better occasion than during the International Festival, an enormous celebration of culture where you can be sure that you’ll find just about anything and everything that’s fun, friendly and fabulous within the city limits.
Taking place every two years, the Manchester International Festival aims to showcase the world of international art and culture in a single place – a place which just happens to be one of the cultural hubs of Great Britain. From all around the globe, singers, dancers, musicians, performers, actors and much, much more travel to Manchester to give attendees a little taste of their own culture. There are street performances taking place as well as ticketed shows where you can see world famous singers do their thing, or attend ballets and musicals, stand up or improvisational comedy shows, drama, dance, music, art showings and much, much more. The whole city of Manchester comes to life during the weeks that the festival is on and you can be sure that there is never a better time to visit than during the festival.
Reminiscent of Edinburgh’s world famous International Festival Fringe, Manchester’s festival has also taken on something of a life of its own, even in spite of only having been running since 2007. Just like in Edinburgh, the festival is artist driven, meaning that the artists are the ones who choose to perform and make the effort to do so. This is often considered a great way of doing things because it usually means that artists attend the festivals through a love of what they do rather than under any monetary reason, which results in shows with a different energy and passion.
For 2011’s line up, Manchester has already revealed a stunning array of artists and celebrities that will be attending the festival. Bjork is top of the list so far, and anybody familiar with her iconic style will know that if anybody can bring their individual country’s culture into a room, it’s Bjork. As well as the Icelandic princess of weird pop, Damon Albarn will be appearing, as well as Johnny Vegas, Punchdrunk, WU LYF and much much more. Visitors can expect to be wowed by an array of performers both famous and yet-to-be.
When returning to your
hotels in Manchester after a day of performance and culture you’ll probably be exhausted, but you can go to sleep assured that there’ll be more than enough to have you springing out of bed the next morning for another round in Manchester’s fantastic International Festival!
