Despite being a relatively small country, Italy is home to some of the world's most romantic destinations. Favourite locations with honeymooners and amorous holidaymakers include Venice, Florence, Lake Como and Tuscany. But despite this stiff competition, the capital of Rome has long been considered the most popular spot for a love-filled holiday in Italy, thanks to its ancient sights, beautiful skyline and romantic atmosphere. If you're planning a passionate holiday in Rome, here are five experiences you cannot do without.

First, take your loved one to see Rome's most famous sights, like the Trevi Fountain. This iconic Baroque fountain has been immortalised as a romantic location in films like Roman Holiday, La Dolce Vita and Three Coins in the Fountain. As a result, you'll see plenty of couples milling alongside locals and tourists here, and all of them tossing coins into the cascading waters. According to tradition, anyone who throws a coin into the Trevi Fountain will one day return to Rome and the estimated 3000 euros a day the fountain receives now go towards helping the city's poor. Other romantic sights include the world-famous Colosseum, which looks particularly impressive when lit-up at night, and the Spanish Steps, known to be the widest staircase in Europe.

Another romantic experience you cannot miss in Rome is visiting its many charming parks and gardens. The scenic Villa Borghese gardens are popular, especially with art and architecture lovers and its unusual water clock and row boats for hire are particular highlights. On the other hand, Gianicolo offers some of the best views of Rome, as well as a vibrant park atmosphere for couples hoping to enjoy some quality time outdoors on their trip. Pincio (also known as the Pincian Hill), also offers romantic vistas of the city, and is linked to Villa Borghese by a pedestrian bridge.

If you're only in Rome for a few days and don't have time to relax in its parks for hours on end, spend some time in its many piazzas instead. Piazza del Campidoglio, for example, is popular with local couples and amorous two-somes on Rome city breaks. Situated at the top of Capitoline Hill, it also offers breathtaking views of the city's skyline and is particularly romantic when it is illuminated at night-time.

Once you've explored Rome's nooks and crannies, you can't miss out on the cosy atmosphere offered by some of its most romantic restaurants. Across town, you'll find a range of eateries offering authentic Roman cuisine, from cheap local diners to pricey culinary hotspots. The trick here is to stay away from areas that are crowded with tourists and to eat where the locals eat. Speak to the concierge at your hotel or, if your Italian is up to scratch, seek a local Roman's advice on the most romantic restaurants in the city.

Finally, no trip to Rome - romantic or otherwise - is complete without sampling some of Italy's famous gelato. This rich and creamy ice cream has no counterpart anywhere else in the world and is ideal when you want to cool off with something tasty on a hot summer afternoon. Choose a double-cone and share it with your partner for a romantic afternoon treat, while you appreciate everything that's great about holidays in Rome.
