Travel plays a major role in modern life, with many people being required to head overseas on business and ever more people taking years off to see the world. Whether you're travelling away from home for a short time or a permanent basis, keeping in touch with friends and relatives can be essential for your happiness and security.

Long gone are the days where international calls were expensive and complicated to arrange, with global cell phone tariffs and internet calling services being convenient, and keeping costs to a minimum. But even if you have all this technology at your fingertips, it's important to work out how to use it effectively and responsibly.

If you're travelling independently, or away from home for the first time, calling your friends and family too often could cause you to lose some of this independence. Similarly, you should avoid promising to people that you'll be in touch regularly, as this could seriously restrict your feelings of freedom. You also need to bear in mind the possible time difference between the place you're calling from and your home town, to ensure you don't accidentally wake people up in the middle of the night - even if it's bright and sunny where you are.

If you're using a computer to call people over the internet, make sure you sign up with a service that allows you to call mobiles and landlines just as easily as other computers, without you having to pay exorbitant prices for the service. Speaking in person can be more effective than sending emails or relying on social networking sites and messaging services, and if you use video calling, this could help you to feel even more in touch.

International communication existed before the advent of the internet, of course, and you could still find time-honored means of communication effective too. Sending a postcard via snail mail might not be the cheapest or most efficient option, but it means your loved ones can look forward to receiving something in the mail that they'll be able to keep as a memento of your trip overseas.

If you're travelling for an extended period, or emigrating abroad, visiting family and friends back home can be a great reason for taking vacations. Alternatively, you could invite your loves ones over to stay for a week or two, and see why you're so in love with your new home.
