Comparing all the options available to you is vital if you're hoping to secure the best deals, but while consumers may be adept at seeking out bargains in supermarkets, or when making expensive purchases such as cars, many fail to realise the substantial amounts they could be saving by switching their energy provider.

Many people who remain with the same energy provider for a number of years - either out of a sense of loyalty, or simply because they hadn't considered switching before - could enjoy big savings when changing their electricity service for a different provider. Even if one particular energy company has proven affordable and reliable in the past, the ever-changing nature of the electricity market means that competing tariffs from different suppliers may have overtaken these in since you last made a comparison, leaving you lagging behind and paying more than you should be.

Switching electricity supplier is an easier task than you might think. Once you've found the new tariff you want to switch to, you should inform your current supplier that you wish to end your service - bearing in mind that it may not be possible to leave at present if you are locked into a contract. Sometimes it may not even be necessary to contact your old supplier, as the new company can do this for you - though you should allow up to six weeks for the transition to be complete, and to start enjoying cheaper electricity on your new tariff.

Just because you switch electricity provider doesn't mean you'll instantly fix the problem of expensive utility bills, however. If it's the case that you are still paying more than you think you should be for your electricity each quarter, the problem may lie closer to home, and require a change in your personal habits and the way you use electricity.

Switching off appliances when they're not in use could be the most important step you take in slashing your fuel bills, especially lights which are typically the biggest consumers of electricity in homes. If you feel your rooms are fitted with more lighting than they need to be, installing dimmer switches to control the light level, or replacing standard bulbs with energy-saving equivalents, could lead to instant reductions on your electricity bills. If you need to replace any electrical appliances or devices, you should also favour products that boast good energy ratings, as these will use less electricity than alternative products on the market.
