Malta is an island found in the Mediterranean Sea, located around 93km south of Sicily and 288 km north-east of Tunisia. North African and Arabic influences mean Malta offers a smorgasbord of different foods, crafts and cultures to immerse yourself in.
The climate in Malta is temperate. Winters tend to be mild with some rainfall and summers are dry, warm and sunny, making this the perfect time to hit the beach.
One of Malta’s defining features is the high concentration of beaches. Long stretches of both sandy and rocky plains means you are spoilt for choice when it comes to sunning yourself and Malta’s compact size means you are never too far away from a seaside spot.
If you are staying on the northern part of the island, seek out Ghadira Bay which is one of the most popular beaches on the whole island. Ghadira Bay is found in Mellieha and is a long, sandy expanse that is easily accessed and popular with locals and tourists alike.
A few minutes drive from Ghadira Bay will take you to Paradise Bay, a secluded spot in the most northern part of the island. As the name suggests, Paradise Bay is a picturesque place to visit and is perfect for snorkelling or just relaxing and taking in the stunning scenery.
Another popular northern beach is Ramla Bay which has distinctive red-coloured sand and water sports to keep everyone occupied. Smaller beaches are found at Xlendi and Marsalforn. Travelling slightly further east, San Blas Bay is a secluded spot that is ideal for a quiet day in the sun and surf.
Malta’s eastern coast is a long and rocky stretch that begins at Qawra Point on the north of the island and continues down the coast to Sliema Creek. There are various points along the eastern coast where you can make your way down to the ocean and bathe in the azure Maltese waters.
Continuing to the southern coast you will find plenty of quiet bays where you can truly escape the crowds and enjoy the quieter side of beach life in Malta. Highlights include St.Peter’s Pool in Delimara and Ghar Lapsi which can be found nearby Siggiewi. The southern coast of Malta is particularly good for snorkelling so get your goggles and flippers ready.
Also worth a mention is Gozo, the second-largest island in the Maltese archipelago. Gozo is scattered with bays and beaches where you can swim and sunbathe to your heart’s desire. Golden sandy beaches makes Gozo a postcard perfect place to visit.
Moving around to the west of the island, two of the most enticing beach destinations are Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha. These two bays lie adjacent to each other so you can easily visit both.
Ghajn Tuffieha is usually the quieter of the two options and both boast long open sandy stretches where you can take a walk or simply relax and enjoy all that some of the finest
