It's that time of year again, when people around the world make promises to themselves with the aim of improving their lives in various ways. But what are the most common New Year resolutions people make each year?

Some people are opposed to the idea of New Year resolutions, believing that people shouldn't wait until an arbitrary date rolls around to make positive changes to their lives. However, the long-running tradition and supportive atmosphere of New Year make it a winner - not to mention that its occurrence so soon after the indulgence of the Christmas period means that many of the things people may wish to change about their bodies, habits or lifestyles could have been brought squarely in the spotlight over the holiday.

For many people, the number one New Year's resolution is to get into shape - whether that means losing weight, getting into a regular exercise regime or eating a healthier diet, the latter of which can be a resolution in its own right. However, choosing to get fit and healthy can mean more than just signing up for a gym membership, as without sufficient willpower you may very quickly fall back into old habits.

If the world of exercise and fitness is new to you, don't push yourself too hard, and consider setting more achievable goals - such as working out once a week rather than every day, at least initially. If you don't feel comfortable working out in such a public place as a gym, you could also make use of the home workout DVD you received for Christmas - many celebrities release fitness videos this time of year, one of the biggest at the moment being Jane Fonda Fit and Strong which could give you a great workout in the privacy of your own living room.

Instead of starting a new pastime, you may instead wish to stop an existing one - such as smoking or drinking. The same rule of moderation applies here, as smokers and heavy drinkers aren't always encouraged to forgo their habits entirely - lowering your consumption gradually can be more effective and healthier, as long as you have the willpower to see it through to its end.

Not all resolutions are about the body though, and for many people it's money worries that place high on the list of things to change in the new year. Getting out of debt is a common desire, especially during difficult financial times, while those who are better off may wish to start budgeting or saving more effectively, to ensure less of their hard-earned money is frittered away irresponsibly.
