Things to do in Ankara

Turkish capital Ankara is a city that you’ll never forget. With a wonderful European scent to its air and a fabulous collection of attractions and activities that are bound to impress any visitor, Ankara has just about everything you could ever wish for in a holiday destination – and then some. Whether you’re a foodie looking for new tastes to tempt your palate or a culture vulture hoping to discover a wealth of Turkish lore and history, Ankara is the perfect city to suit your needs, as well as those with anybody lucky enough to be coming with you.



Although there are whispers of history floating through Ankara’s streets and alleyways, the city is very firmly planted in this century, meaning you’ll find all the comforts of home within its walls. That said, there is a hint of the past whistling in the wind, and you’ll enjoy sensing a distinct touch of the mythical eastern world during your travels. For a quick plunge into the city’s history, however, a visit to the Anatolian Civilizations Museum is your best bet, as the museum contains over two hundred thousand historic pieces – so many that only a fraction of these can be displayed at any one time. Of course, that only means that there’s a good reason to visit Ankara again and again in future vacations.

More historical sights can be taken in throughout the city, one of the most impressive being the exceptional Ankara Citadel, the foundations of which were laid by the Galatians and completed, many years later, by the Romans. Hattussas is also worth visiting, as these ancient ruins offer an experience unlike no other – and fantastic photographic opportunities for all those shutterbugs out there. The Roman Baths are another ruined site that have a magnificent history; built in the third century AD, the baths comprised three levels, of which two still exist today.



You’ll be pleased to know that, before you head to your hotels in Ankara after a long day of exploring you’ll be able to sample some of Ankara’s fabulous local cuisine in any number of restaurants where you can sample delightful food and refuel after a long day. Follow that with a trip to one of the city’s bars and you’ve set yourself up for a great night – just make sure you don’t party too hard, you’ve got another long day of exploring coming up in the morning!
