Europe holds some delightful destinations that are worth exploring if you ever decide to book a holiday in a European country. But would Flanders be one of the main areas you would consider?
You have probably heard of Flanders with relation to Flanders Fields - in association with some of the fallen in the First World War. The poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ has cemented our thoughts and feelings of the war and we remember the poppy as a symbol of it.
But there is more to Flanders in the 21st century than you may think, and specific areas of this part of Belgium are more popular than others as well. For instance the Church of Our Lady exists in a very popular city in West Flanders. Work began back in the 13th century and the building was only completed in the 15th century. Nowadays the most impressive part of the building is its spire. If you watch out for it you will be able to locate the church long before you actually get there.
The St John’s Hospital is nearby too, and this shares with you the history of the hospital where nuns and monks once tended to the sick. Centuries of history are there to be seen every single day. When you consider that the earliest evidence of life here dates back as far as 1188, you can imagine how much life has changed in the intervening years. Another clue to the city within Flanders that we are referring to comes with a guided walk called the City of Monuments. A guided walk is often the best way to learn about where you are and what there is to be seen.
