November marks the start of the skiing calendar in many areas of the world. The month sees the arrival of the first snows that cover the mountains to form the challenging (and not so challenging) slopes that attract people from all over the world.

Since this is the start of the season, the full range of skiing destinations won't yet be open for business. While some resorts will only just be seeing the first sprinkles of snow on their slopes in November, in others the snow will be mounting up steadily already. The message is clear – if you choose your resort wisely you will be able to get in some skiing action right at the start of the season.

You can find the best places to ski in November simply by finding the highest mountains. We all know that the highest peaks will see the first falls of snow, so it stands to reason that the world’s highest resorts will be throwing open their doors before anywhere else.

Val Thorens in France is a good bet for a November skiing holiday. Not only is it close to the UK, it is also much cheaper than it would be to visit during the height of the season. It offers plenty for experienced and beginning skiers to get their teeth into and you can look forward to a nice break here right at the start of the season, while other resorts at lower altitudes are still waiting for the first snows.

You can also head further afield to America and try skiing in the Lake Tahoe area. This area sits high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, on the boundary between California and Nevada, so you can expect great scenery and plenty of opportunities to strap those skis on.

Back in Europe you might want to consider Finland if you are keen to try somewhere a bit different. Levi is a superb choice since the snow generally starts in October. This means that there is a whole month for it to accumulate before November even arrives, offering unusually deep snow for an early skiing break.

Zermatt in Switzerland is so resplendent with snow that you could visit it earlier than November if you wanted to. It is worth considering if you want more than just skiing too. Most resorts have different things you can see and do nearby, but Zermatt is arguably the best of the lot. For a true luxury break that you won’t forget, this could be the ideal destination for you.

Even if you book a last minute skiing holiday you should always make sure you have everything you need. Winter sports travel insurance is essential to ensure you have the cover you need, so you can relax and enjoy the best early experiences in skiing in the world.
