A few years ago when the global economic downturn was really squeezing our wallets as tightly as possible, going off on holiday to some exotic land was completely out of the question for millions of people around the world. Instead, people turned to holidaying at home, or going for "staycations" as it was coined, where people stay within their home country to explore more local lands than those found beyond.
Staycationing ended up becoming quite popular among the masses and many features and reviews showed up online and in papers and magazines about the phenomenon, providing analysis of the changes in attitudes people were taking towards their holidays as well as advice on the best places to go and check out if you were planning one such trip.
However, now that the economy has perked up a bit, more and more people are finding it possible to pack up their passports and head off to some more far flung destinations. The question is, though, will they? The truth is that although holidaying at home was popular largely as an alternative to going abroad because the latter couldn’t be afforded, so many people enjoyed these staycations that many converted to the idea that there’s just as much to see and do at home as there is abroad. So does that mean that staycationing can expect to remain as popular with the masses as it has been during the worst of the recession? Perhaps, but one thing you can be sure of is that the weather will play a large role in people’s decisions whether to stay or go.
