Amsterdam is famous for its museums, covering all aspects of the city's colourful culture and history. One of the destinations that's now firmly established itself as an essential stop on any visit to the city is the Heineken Experience, housed in the site of the former brewery, offering something different for visitors to the Netherlands city who aren't so drawn to Van Gogh or tulips.

They may no longer brew the famous beer here in Amsterdam, where it was first brewed in 1867, but that doesn't make a trip around the old brewery any less fascinating - and there's more than enough beer on the premises that you won't have to worry about not receiving your complimentary draughts. Heineken is famous in many parts of the world, with beer fans claiming it has a fresher taste and also helps drinkers avoid the problem of hangovers. If you're currently unable to recall its distinctive flavour though, you'll be able to sample freshly brewed beer during your trip.

There's more to visiting the historic brewery than just drinking, of course - whether you embrace the opportunity to meet like-minded travellers or you're drawn to the history and rides. The exhibition theatre features more than 50 advertisements from throughout the beer's long history, and you can even see the famous shire horses that feature in them by taking a stable walk. If you've ever wondered what it would feel like to be a beer bottle, you'll also finally get the chance to satisfy your curiosity by boarding the Brew You ride. Be aware that visitors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The Heineken Experience is a great addition to any Amsterdam city break itinerary, but you should try to get there early to avoid the lines if possible. The attraction opens at 11am through most of the year, with guided tours taking place every couple of hours, or you can take a self-guided tour to see the museum at your own pace. Don't forget to explore the gift shop at the end, which offers more than your standard museum fare - including beer mugs that could be the perfect memento of your Amsterdam trip.

If you're staying in the centre of Amsterdam, you can easily reach the Heineken brewery on the city's excellent tram system - taking tram number 16, 24 or 25 and getting off at the Heinekenplein stop. This can be favourable over taking your own car, due to the limited parking spaces available.
