Scotland is all too frequently overlooked by English holidaymakers looking for a short break destination, though the recession has improved its standing somewhat as more vacationers chose to take their holidays in the British Isles to save money. While much of Scotland can be cold in the winter, the snowy landscape makes it more appealing to many travellers, while Scotland in the summer enjoys the same warm, sunny weather as the rest of the UK.

Scotland offers a wide variety of destinations to suit people of all interests and backgrounds, from sightseeing and shopping in the cosmopolitan cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow to outdoor activities amidst the majestic scenery of the Scottish Highlands. However, one region that encompasses everything that's great about Scotland is Ayrshire - especially if you're interested in finding out more about the country's fascinating history.

Scotland is well known for its many historic castles, and Ayrshire is no exception. Ancient stone fortifications litter the landscape in various states of ruin, some of which can be visited for free if you have a map and a car, while lovers of Scottish literature will be keen to trace the roots of the national poet Robert Burns, who was born in the area. Another famous Scot born in Ayrshire was William Wallace, also known as Braveheart.

Even if you're not so drawn to Scottish history, Ayrshire can be an ideal location for golfing breaks. Forget St Andrews - Ayrshire offers a mix of championship level golf courses and courses more renowned for their stunning scenery, and many golfers cite the region as their favourite to play the sport. Ayrshire is also a great place to try other outdoor activities too, from kayaking and fishing to horse riding.

Ayrshire also encompasses several of Scotland's most prominent islands, which can be considered essential ports of call on a longer holiday, and can be the ideal destination for a weekend break due to their more compact size. Arran is the largest of these islands, which can be easily reached by ferry just a short distance from Glasgow, and features mountain scenery and forests that allow you to truly escape the modern world for a time.

You'll find a great deal of choice when it comes to hotels in Scotland too, with Ayrshire offering everything from budget guest houses to luxury holiday cottages. If you're planning to travel during peak season, or over bank holidays or other special occasions, booking ahead can be essential to secure your place in this increasingly popular region.
