Aberdeen is a city that is often overlooked for short breaks due to the more prominent presences of capital city Edinburgh and arts capital Glasgow, but this is a shame – Aberdeen just so happens to offer a wealth of cultural and social aspects that would have any visitor planning to come back as quickly as they could.

Situated in the north east of Scotland, Aberdeen is easy to get to by car or rail and has plenty of options for the whole family. Home to the country’s largest national park, one thing you’ll notice about Aberdeen is the sheer choice when it comes to outdoor activities. Thanks to its wonderful location, Aberdeen allows for easy access to loads of country walks, hill hikes, days exploring nearby lochs and much more. And all of that’s before you even consider the city itself.

There’s so much to explore in Aberdeen city that you’ll struggle to fit it all into a single weekend. Architecture fans and even those without a vast interest will be struck by the dramatic look of the city as granite edifices mingle with the city’s underlying air of culture, history and art. Museums abound as the perfect place to begin your discovery of Aberdeen’s rich history, and fans of Scotland’s bloody and dramatic past are bound to find a wealth of information relating to the various clans and the country’s struggle with England over the centuries, with galleries and exhibitions available for visitors to learn all about how Scottish people have lived since the Picts through their difficult history into the present day.

See world class art displayed for yourself in one of Aberdeen’s fantastic galleries and then why not take a trip to a nearby indie café to relax and have something to eat? You might discover more art contained within cafés like this as local artists sometimes display their work on the walls of cafés and bars, often available to purchase.

For an activity that’s a little on the different side, you can also head to Aberdeen beach to have a crack at surfing, as the city’s position on the coast allows for excellent waves that brings surfers from all over to tackle. If you like the idea of sport but don’t want to attempt one so extreme, Aberdeen’s golfing scene is fantastic and there are plenty of courses to discover and play a round on all over the city. Perhaps you’d like to visit the beach for non-surfing purposes – that’s just fine, as the beach is within walking distance of the city centre, making it perfect for day trips and picnics.

All of that exploring is sure to tire you out, but you can rest in your Aberdeen hotels assured that the next day will be just as busy!
