Your car can mean many things and often shows a number of your innermost characteristics, however it does not reflect what you’re worth to other people, financially speaking.
Statistics show that many luxury car buyers are middle-class individuals who find it worthwhile spending more on the additional quality which expensive brands can often offer. Perhaps they like the sweet, yet brief, moments when they look alongside their luxury vehicle at intersections and see people’s facial expressions, which sometimes indicate a degree of admiration.
But in reality, what are the benefits of impressing people you will never see again? Your friends are not likely to be overly interested in the type of vehicle your purchase. Furthermore, some of the richest people drive slowly and patiently around in a ten-year-old car. Their luxury car, if they own one at all, is underneath a tarpaulin in the second garage bay.
So, if a car reveals little or nothing about its driver’s income, what does your car really say about you?
Firstly, it shows other people your good taste - or perhaps even lack of! There are some unsightly combinations of colours on the market and not all models are particularly attractive looking either. When you have taste, especially a sense of style that matches your personality, clothing, job, home and attitude, people do notice.
Your car can also tell people if you are a risk taker. Do you have courage or a care-free spirit? Your choice of car may reveal this kind of information about you. A responsible driver might have a traditional, safety-oriented sedan with 4 doors. This is the type of person who knows to arrange their
windshield replacement straightaway when it becomes chipped, or replace their tyres as soon as their car has travelled a certain distance.
Then there’s the single man, with no dependents or worries, who drives a bright red, two-door performance car, as fast as the speed limit will allow. However, statistically speaking, this might be the person who is likely to have the next minor collision.
Insurers know this, which is why every detail of your car either raises or lowers your insurance premiums. A car with four doors tends to have a much lower insurance premium than one with a spoiler or ‘wing’ on the back.
So, next time you pull up next to someone at a red light, think of all the things you can guess about them. You may be wrong, but then again, you may be right. They could be guessing about you, too.
